Another Facebook Timeline Change

Facebook, since its launch, has liked to provide surprise changes for us, sometimes I think just to panic those that don’t like change. Do you remember a few months ago when everyone said they didn’t want to switch to ‘timeline’ and now everyone is saying ‘actually it looks rather cool’?

Well, Facebook have announced in a fan page update that today (26th April) they are updating the size and location of the profile image. A small change for some but for others this may mean a massive redesign of their profile image and cover image.

The new size of the facebook profile image will be 160 x 160. This will just resize the current image which already has to be at least 180 x 180 to be accepted and compressed to the current visible 125 x 125 box. The new image will fit in 23px from the left and 210px from the top of the page.

I think the most frustrated with this change will be design agencies that look after lots of clients pages and have designed something specific for them. The general user should have no problem with 1 quick nip and tuck. From what we can tell the change is to do with mobile device display and shows the power mobile devices now have for such a change being made so soon after launching timeline. Let us know if this change affected your timeline display.

Facebook’s statement is as follows:

“On April 26, we will be updating the size of the profile picture on all Pages. We are letting you know about this small change in advance so that you can update your profile picture on April 26. The new profile picture will be 160 x 160 pixels and will sit at 23 pixels from the left and 210 pixels from the top of the Page.”
